Shorinji Kempo was developed to act as a framework for improving individuals, rather than as purely a fighting style or sport, and has a strong philosophical component rooted in Zen Buddhism. It is not religious, however, and does not conflict with any religious practice. We study philosophy through Shorinji Kempo in order to gain a better understanding of ourselves, the world, and how best to change both for the better.
The aim of Shorinji Kempo practice is to acquire a healthy body, a healthy mind and the ability to defend ourselves and others. Technical training develops physical fitness and self-defence ability, and intellect and integrity are trained through meditation and studying philosophy.
