Easter Holiday and Grading Success

Class Information

Next Saturday (7th April 2012) there will be no class due to the Easter holiday.

Grading News!

Sensei Rob and his assistants would like to congratulate Lara, for passing her 3rd Kyu grading.  Lara becomes Angel Dojo’s first green belt.  Only three more gradings till black belt, Lara!

After the Easter holiday there will be another round of gradings, so watch this space for news. For those who are grading, the website has some good resources, you can download a copy of the syllabus here, read up about the stances you need to know, brush up on vocabulary. Remember, kenshi above the age of seven grading for green tip and above, will need to know how to tie their own belt, there is no time like the present to learn!

Shorinji Kempo demonstration at City University

City Shorinji Kempo Dojo is organising a martial arts demonstration at their training venue at City University. All are welcome to come and watch, and maybe even give the class a go. Sensei Robert Villiers is organising the demonstration and it will include examples of Embu (paired practise), Randori (sparring), Chinkon (meditation), and both Goho (Hard) and Juho (soft) waza (techniques). Sensei Rob will be performing an embu with Sensei Martin Dixon of SOAS dojo, and there will also be a demonstration of shakujo (quarterstaff) techniques.

Time & Date : 7:30-8:30pm Monday 30th December
Location : Martial Arts Room, Lower Ground Floor,
City University Main Building,
Northampton Square,
London EC1V 0HB

There will be people by the entrance to the Drysdale Building to give you directions to the Martial Arts Room. If you think you might be interested in giving it a go, wear loose clothing appropriate for e.g. a gym workout, there will be an opportunity at the end of the demo to try out some techniques!

Welcome to 2012

Happy new year! Welcome to 2012 and welcome back to Shorinji Kempo at Angel Dojo. I hope everybody is refreshed and ready to meet the challenges of the new year. We had our first class of the year last week, and it was good to see so many of you back and ready to learn.

There will be gradings coming up soon, so make every effort to attend and practise your techniques. With any luck the dojo will soon be a much more colourful place as we get more tags on belts, and more full coloured belts. All it takes to make it to the next grade is to keep on attending and giving your best effort.

And on the topic of gradings, congratulations are due to Sensei Rob for passing his 5th Dan grading! This is a phenomenal achievement and means that Sensei Rob is one of the highest graded instructors in the UK!

Welcome back!

Hello everyone, I’d like to welcome all our kenshi back (a little belatedly) for a new year of training at Angel Dojo. We hope you’ve all had a good holiday.

We’ve had a lot of newcomers to our class lately, which is excellent. Please try to make new kenshi feel welcome, and train with as many different people as possible during class. It’s often easier to learn the techniques when a beginner is paired with a more experienced kenshi – the more experienced kenshi can learn just as much from teaching as the beginner can from being taught.

Sensei Rob is currently in Cyprus on a kempo training week, as is Jonathan. The class this Saturday (8th October) will go ahead as normal – I will be teaching the class with the assistance of a brown belt from City Dojo, Naomi Oates, who some of you may already know. Please be patient with us this week, as there are quite a few of you, and only two of us – we will do our best to make sure that the class runs smoothly and is just as fun as usual.

See you all on Saturday!

Alice
